Punalu’u Black Sand Beach Portraits

Have you ever seen a black sand beach? They’re not ultra rare but they’re far less common than the white and beige beaches we have on the mainland (mostly because it’s made from volcanic rock sediments). When I first visited the Big Island of Hawaii, I knew that a black sand beach was exactly where I would want to host portraits with a loving couple. Thankfully, I was able to connect with Cash and Jazmine, Hilo residents and local creatives on my favorite Hawaiian island. This perfect black sand beach couple’s portraits at Punalu’u Beach was exactly what I had in mind.

I love Cash and Jazmine’s meet cute story. Jazmine and Cash were working in a local restaurant a few years back and when Jazmine saw Cash, she said “That’s my husband.” And the rest is literally history. They later connected and sparks flew from that first meeting. Now, as a married couple living on the Big Island, they continue to grow their love and creativity with one another.

Jazmine and her husband Cash are owners of Alchem Media Photography. They are Big Island photographers who specialize in raw, intimate, and beautiful portraiture including boudoir, maternity, elopements, and fashion editorials. Alongside their beautiful portraits, they are also adventuresome souls who believe in advocating for equality, human rights, and creativity. When they’re not shooting photos across the Big Island and the world, you can find them cuddling with their pets on their lanai or honing their other creative outlets such as music.

I’m grateful for Cash and Jaz who agreed to model for my New Adventure Workshop this past January on the Big Island. They both understand my desire for raw creativity and adventure. This sunrise shoot at Punalu’u black sand beach was in fact, a dream come true for me.

I met Jazmine on Instagram and fell in love with her work. Getting to meet both she and Cash the morning of the shoot was just a surreal moment in life because it was still very dark at a black sand beach. So you can imagine there wasn’t much light to be had. But they walked up in their outstanding outfits and I couldn’t help but hug them both, finally getting to meet these wonderful souls in my favorite place.

They were rockstars modeling for us and as you can see from this couple’s sunrise portrait session at Punalu’u black sand beach, they are naturals.
